Problems with Pregnancy? Try an Egg Donor

It can be a challenging experience trying to get pregnant. There are many couples and families throughout the world who are keen to have a baby, although it's often not so simple. There are a number of factors which can determine whether or not a woman can get pregnant. The factors range from the health of the male's sperm and the wellness of the woman's sexual organs.

One major problem that many couples face is the infertility of the female, particularly in regards to her eggs. While this problem had prevented many women in the past from being able to become pregnant and give birth to children herself, this is no longer the case. Medical advances have given the opportunity for women with infertile eggs another chance to become a mother. The solution for many women is to get the help of an egg donor. This kind of treatment is becoming more popular and accessible for women as it effectively treats infertility by getting healthy eggs from one woman and implanting them in another woman. This all involves a process of in vitro fertilization. The popularity of the procedure is evident with the American Pregnancy Association's report that about 3000 babies are born each year as a result of donor eggs being used by women.

There are some risks to the procedure for the egg receiver and egg donor, such as discomfort for the donor during egg extraction and a failed pregnancy for the egg receiver. In any case, the risk of serious complications during the egg donation procedure is very small. Nonetheless, egg donation overall also comes with many potential rewards. According to SART, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, the success rate is up to 60% for egg donor cycles in the United States. The biggest reward is the ability for the woman to become pregnant and give birth, which can be a very significant experience for many mothers. Another advantage is that women who are beyond their reproductive years, such as those who have reached menopause, can actually become pregnant and give birth through egg donation. The oldest female to have given birth via egg donation was 66 years old!

In practical and legal terms, the child of the woman who received the egg donation would be her biological child, but not her genetic child, and many women are totally fine with this compared with the prospect of no child birth at all.
