A disease is said to be rare if it occurs in less than 20,000 people in the United States. There are almost 7000 rare diseases. Many rare diseases are caused due to genetic defect. Some diseases effect very few people while some are widespread in certain parts of the world but occur rarely in other parts. Rare diseases can also be life threatening some times. Many people are not even aware of the existence of such diseases. These diseases are very poorly publicized, which should not be the case.
